Earlier this month, we told you about the massive deal between Nissan and Mitsubishi that is waiting to be approved. The deal, in which Nissan would purchase 34% equity stake in Mitsubishi for 237 billion yen, would catapult Renault-Nissan to the world’s third-largest automotive group. We’re happy to announce that the deal has finally been approved! This five-year alliance will bring multiple “synergies” or commonalities between the two brands, most importantly, common vehicle platforms and technology sharing. "The combination of Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors and Renault will create a new force in global car-making," said Ghosn. "It will be one of the world's three largest automotive groups, with the economies of scale, breakthrough technologies and manufacturing capabilities to produce vehicles to serve customer demand in every market segment and in every geographic market around the world." Nissan CEO Announces “Massive Plans” for Mitsubishi Deal
As you may have already heard earlier this year, Nissan and Mitsubishi entered into a strategic partnership together. Since then, we have heard very little details on what that means for both car brands. However, recently Renault-Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, confirmed that they were going to announce a “massive’ business plan very shortly. "This is not a deal where we say, 'OK, we made the deal, now let's think what we can do together," told reporters . "No. The day we announce the deal, we're going to tell you exactly what we're going to do together. And it's massive. It's massive between Mitsubishi and Nissan. And also, it may be very significant between Renault and Mitsubishi." Very little details have been released so far, but we do know that the plan will include details regarding how Nissan and Mitsubishi will grow the U.S. market and expand the electric vehicle technology. "We will have to dig more in the U.S.," Ghosn said. "But when you talk about purchasing, engineering, platforms, engines, plug-in hybrids -- it's massive." As of right now, Nissan and Mitsubishi are still waiting for the deal to be approved by the government. It is expected to be approved by the end of the year. Meet the First Solid-Oxide Fuel Cell Vehicle
Nissan’s ongoing commitment to the development of zero-emission vehicles has led to the development of the first Solid Oxide Fuel-Cell (SOFC)-powered prototype. This vehicle runs on 100% bio-ethanol electric power which charges a 24kWh battery and enables a range of up to 600km. The energy-generating components of this vehicle are clean, very efficient, and produce carbon-neutral emissions. Just like the BladeGlider we talked about in the last blog, the SOFC-powered vehicle was unveiled at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where it will undergo further field tests on public roads. Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn said: “The e-Bio Fuel-Cell offers eco-friendly transportation and creates opportunities for regional energy production…all the while supporting the existing infrastructure. In the future, the e-Bio Fuel-Cell will become even more user-friendly. Ethanol-blended water is easier and safer to handle than most other fuels. Without the need to create new infrastructure, it has great potential to drive market growth.” "Nissan Unveils World's First Solid-Oxide Fuel Cell Vehicle." Nissan Online Newsroom. Meet the Nissan BladeGlider
The Olympics aren’t the only exciting thing happening in Rio de Janeiro this month. Last week, Nissan unveiled two new vehicle prototypes, one of which was the Nissan BladeGlider. The unveiling took place at the Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) as part of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility strategy. The Nissan BladeGlider is a 100% electric sports car and will contribute to the zero-emissions future that Nissan is working towards. Features of the BladeGlider include an advanced chassis configuration with a narrow front track and wider rear track for optimum aerodynamic efficiency and handling stability, high-waisted/rear-hinged dihedral doors, an open roof that is reinforced with an integrated rollover protection structure, seamless cockpit windscreen providing panoramic views, four point safety harness for each occupant, and a two-screen central display. Unfortunately, this innovative vehicle is only a working prototype but if Nissan has their way it will be much more than that in the future. Carlos Ghosn, president and chief executive officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. said: "These prototypes epitomize Nissan's drive to expand its Intelligent Mobility strategy, where driving pleasure combines with environmental responsibility. Nissan believes that enthusiasts should look forward to a zero emission future and Nissan BladeGlider is a perfect demonstration of that. It's the electric vehicle for car lovers."

A New Approach For Nissan
Everyday driving is filled with obstacles and challenges. We encounter many of them frequently, like potholes and stop signs that “come out of nowhere”. But for those times when a pedestrian walks out in front of your or a vehicle in front of you comes to a stop suddenly you want to know without a doubt that your car is going to perform how you want it and when you want it to. Nissan’s new campaign shows just how capable its cars, trucks and SUVs really are. Above is the first spot in the upcoming set and features “pop-up” obstacles that the driver and the Nissan must work together to avoid. "Nissan's refreshed marketing strategy clearly showcases our brand while celebrating our safety, capability and quality," said Jeremy Tucker, Vice President, Marketing Communications & Media, Nissan North America. "By putting Nissan's advanced driver assistance systems at center stage – and telling their story in a compelling way – we are educating today's drivers on technology available in the Nissan lineup. The message pairs Nissan's brand-DNA of driving excitement with relevant product information about how our vehicles are engineered to help handle whatever the road may bring." Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo Comes To Life
We imagine that one of the most exciting jobs at a car manufacturer is creating new and concept vehicles. And if the recent gathering of GT concept vehicles in London is any indication, we are certainly right! To celebrate the launch of a new game, Grand Turismo Sport, eight vehicles were displayed at the Copper Box in Olympic Park in London. One of those cars was the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo. This concept started out as a dream project for Nissan designers and not expected to go beyond the designing stage. But the team at Nissan Design Europe had so much potential that a Nissan engineering team in Japan decided to take the concept to the next stage and created a physical model. Watch the video above for a closer look inside the process of designing this revolutionary concept car. Powerful Home Battery Unveiled By Nissan
"Our system will be provided to end users completely ready to use, with all required elements including cabling and installation by a certified professional, at a starting price of 4,000 euros for 4.2 kilowatt-hours (kWh) nominal," Eaton Electrical EMEA's Vice President of Marketing Cyrille Brisson said. Brisson is referring to the newly unveiled Nissan and Eaton Electric joint project, xStorage, a home battery system. Made from recycled LEAF® car batteries, xStorage is only available in the UK right now but developers hope to make it available in the US eventually. The battery draws power from the grid during non-peak times and from renewable sources like solar panels and will even allow you to sell energy back to the grid if you have a surplus. This innovative milestone is a great step forward for both Nissan and energy storage and foreshadows exciting things to come! Chester, Tim.
