“Nissan Intelligent Driving” is bringing us ever closer to true automated driving. This new umbrella of technology is still in its first stage, called “Piloted Drive 1.0”, but it is currently being road tested in Japan. Nissan is developing even more technologies to be added in the future as well and hopes to achieve its goals of “Zero Emissions” and “Zero Fatality”. The two technologies that make up the first stage, “Piloted Drive 1.0”, are an eight-way, 360-degree view camera system and a miniature, high-spec laser scanner. Both work together to allow for autonomous driving, even under heavy highway traffic conditions, by evaluating your surroundings, including other vehicles, and making smooth transportation decisions. "We at Nissan are setting clear goals and preparing for the implementation of piloted drive," said senior vice president of Nissan, Takao Asami. "The prototype that we're introducing here today is proof of how close we are towards the realization of this goal. Autonomous driving technology is getting closer to becoming a thing of the present rather than a thing of the future. Many people are still wondering what it would be like to live in a world where we allow our car to handle the stress of driving and if the technology will just end up making us travel like we are on a giant conveyer belt. Many brands including Nissan, however, are making an effort to continue developing this technology to make it more in tune with the type of driving experience that we would expect today. Recently, Nissan showcased the technology within its new IDS Concept that offers a look at the greater possibilities of autonomous driving. This model comes complete with both a manual mode and Piloted Drive, and what makes this technology so unique is that the autonomous driving is programmed to follow the driving patterns of the driver. Therefore, when the driver is driving the car in manual mode, the IDS’s technology has been designed to record the tendencies and habits of the driver so that when Piloted Drive is selected, the vehicle will continue to drive in the same style. Additionally, the autonomous technology in the IDS will also have the ability to overpower the driver in manual mode in order to prevent a possible accident sensed by the vehicle’s accident prevention technologies. The Nissan Altima and the Nissan Rogue are impressive models that come equipped with a number of innovative technologies that help make your drive first rate no matter how near or far you are traveling. Last month proved to be a record-setting September for Nissan in terms of U.S. sales. The brand reported a total of 111,562 units sold throughout the month and with a 17 percent increase over sales from last September this is officially the brand’s best-ever September results for U.S. sales. At this year’s Bathurst 1000, the Nissan brand will pay tribute to its first-ever Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC) as this year marks the 25th anniversary of that legendary win. The brand will be paying tribute by designing the #23 NISMO Nissan Altima V8, driven by Michael Caruso and Dean Fiore, in the same colors that adorned the 1990 Nissan Skyline HR31 that was driven to victory by Jim Richards back in 1990. Recently, Caruso sat down with Richards to discuss his memories of that historic win and how far the Nissan racing team has come in the past 25 years. Richards still has many fond memories of that time and that particular Skyline, so much so that he actually bought the vehicle to include in his personal collection. "Nissan is happy to celebrate 25 years since our first Australian Touring Car Championship title at this year's Bathurst 1000 by reviving another one of our famous motorsport paint schemes," said Nissan Motor Co. (Australia) Managing Director and CEO Richard Emery. "We were really pleased with the reaction to the Bluebird 'retro' livery that we campaigned at last year's Bathurst 1000 and we are confident that the fans will be just as excited to see the Skyline colors return to Mount Panorama this year. Jim Richards' 1990 ATCC title was the start of a dominant era for Nissan in Australian motorsport. It's fitting that 25 years later we salute Jim. He not only won Nissan our first ATCC crown, he is truly a legend of Australian motorsport. It's fantastic to see the affection that Jim still holds for the Skyline, so much so that he has bought the car and is racing it again. The GT-R R32 gets a lot of attention, even to this day, but the achievements of the Skyline HR31 should not be forgotten." The sport variant category of the mid-size sedan segment has been steadily on the rise, and now, Nissan has unveiled their very own entry into this category, the 2016 Nissan Altima RS. This all-new model was based on the Altima S, but its design, features, and powertrain were given a powerful upgrade taking this already sporty sedan up a notch to firmly place it into the sport variant family. "Anyone can dress up a sedan with custom wheels and a body kit, but that's not in keeping with Nissan's longstanding performance heritage," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, Inc. "Altima SR features a 12.5 percent increase in cornering performance, and we're making SR available with our refined 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine and our higher-powered 3.5-liter V6. It's like having your espresso shot in a choice of Grande or Venti®." There are two available engine options for the 2016 Altima RS. The first option is a 2.5L DOHC Inline 4-Cylinder engine that generates 180 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque and the second option is a 3.5L DOHC V6 engine that generates 270 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. An Xtronic 7-step "manumatic" transmission with specially tuned Gen 3 D-step logic comes standard on this model. Recently, the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Canton, Mississippi celebrated an impressive production milestone when the three millionth Nissan rolled off the assembly line. The historic three millionth model was a Magnetic Black Murano, which was presented to Arnel Bolden, Mayor of the City of Canton, for use by the city. This generous act is part of the over $11 million in charitable donations that this assembly plant has provided to a variety of organizations within the city of Canton. “It is fitting that our 3-millionth vehicle is a Nissan Murano. Since its launch last year, the Murano has continued to win accolades and grow sales. The vehicle’s quality and craftsmanship is a testament to the abilities and commitment of Nissan Canton employees,” said Steve Marsh, vice president, Manufacturing, Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant, Nissan North America, Inc. “The Nissan leadership team appreciates the Canton team’s efforts to build Murano and the other six models that roll off the plant’s vehicle assembly line each day.” Since this plant first opened back in 2003 it has grown from the regional facility that it started as to become a global facility that assembles Nissan models such as the Altima, Armada, NV Cargo Van, NV Passenger Van, Murano, Titan King Cab and Crew Cab, and the Frontier King Cab and Crew Cab. In the past 12 years, the brand has invested $32.9 billion into this facility that employs over 6,000 team members.

Late last week, Nissan debuted the 2016 all-electric LEAF, a vehicle that has the ability to achieve best in class range of 107 miles thanks to an available 30 kWh battery. This is a 27% increase over the previous battery that maxed out at 24 kWh. "The new battery is just one of several enhancements for the 2016 LEAF," said Speaker. "We're also bringing audio and connectivity upgrades by adding NissanConnect with Mobile Apps with 5.0-inch color display as standard features for LEAF S models, and for SV and SL grades we are offering NissanConnect with Navigation and Mobile Apps–featuring a 7.0-inch color display with multi-touch control and Nissan Voice Recognition as standard features.” The SV and SL models will have this enhanced battery as a standard feature. All LEAF models come equipped with an 80kW AC Motor, the NissanConnect System, Bluetooth®, and optional Navigation. The Nissan “Heisman House” is back for another season of college football! This humorous series rounds up many Heisman trophy winners and has them “live” under one roof. The videos will feature 15 athletes and will air from September 3rd until the end of the college football season. In one video, newcomer Marcus Mariota discovers that the house is haunted by the ghost of the first Heisman winner, Jay Berwanger, who is not a fan of people who disrespect his alma mater. In another, Eddie George and Troy Smith, both from Ohio State, get a lesson in art appreciation from Michigan's Charles Woodson. Check out both videos below!
